Did you know that many college campuses across the U.S. already have their own nuclear reactors?

These microreactors are usually part of university research programs that help provide hands-on experience for future nuclear engineers, technicians, and physicists.

They tend to be much more accessible to the public than a commercial nuclear plant might be, and most of them offer tours or public education programs. Eric got to check out UT Austin’s reactor in March, and in the coming weeks, we’ll be stopping by one in Rhode Island.

While these microreactors are used for research, several advanced reactors developers like Oklo, Westinghouse, and USNC are working on ones that can produce up to 10 megawatts of electricity and power the campus.

Last year, Penn State University began collaborating with Westinghouse to build new nuclear. Other colleges, like Purdue, are currently developing technology to run on nuclear power entirely.

Considering universities like these support tens of thousands of people, expanding nuclear on campuses would change the game for clean power.

Colleges in 21 different states are home to microreactors so you might have one in your community and not even know it! Check with your local university to find out and pay a visit.
